A fundraiser in Cumberland County Saturday helped raise money for a special police K-9 officer who is battling cancer.  Dozens of people attended a chicken BBQ benefit at the new Faulkner Cadillac dealership on the Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg.  The fundraiser was organized to help raise money for Bruder, a K-9 officer with the Silver Spring Township Police Department who is fighting cancer.

David Jenkins, patrolman with the Silver Spring Township Police Department says, “They’re detrimental to a lot of our investigations that deal with drugs and that sort of thing because the dog can search a vehicle or home in a fraction of the time it would take a human. They use their smell. They can do things that would take several officers to do they can do by themselves in a minimal amount of time.”

Rhonda Richards, event organizer says, “I just wanted to pull together as a community because these dogs are amazing. They will take a bullet before most people will.”

Bruder needs ten treatments in four weeks.  All of the money raised Sunday will go towards Bruder’s medical bills and treatments.
