Lifesaving heroes on West York Borough Police Department

Sgt. Bradley Thomas and Patrolman Michael Mendez were on duty on January 8 when they were dispatched to the Vikings Athletic Association for a report of a 56-year-old employee who had suffered a heart attack.

The officers arrived within two minutes of being dispatched and found the West York man not breathing and without a pulse.

Sgt. Thomas and Patrolman Mendez immediately began to perform CPR and then used a portable defibrillator owned by the social club until medics arrived.

The officers continued to perform CPR and administered four cardiac shocks using the automated external defibrillator (AED) until the man began to breathe and the officers could detect a pulse.

Arriving medics took over treating the man and transported him to York Hospital. As of Monday, his condition was reportedly improving.

Each West York Borough Police patrol car is equipped with a defibrillator. Officers are trained and certified yearly on how to use them.
