York City sexual assault suspect captured in San Diego

A 19 year old York man wanted on sexual assault charges is arrested by U.S. Marshals in California.  Last June, York City Police began investigating allegations that Keith Biegger had committed sexual offenses against minors.

Last week, an arrest warrant was obtained for Biegger which included charges of Child Pornography, Invasion of Privacy, Sexual Abuse,  and Indecent Assault of Person less than 13 years of age. Friday January 17, city police requested assistance from the United State Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force in locating Biegger.

Yesterday, U.S. Marshals arrested Biegger without incident in the 6000 block of Bantam Lake Avenue in San Diego.  Biegger is expected back in Pennsylvania pending an extradition hearing.

Aren't extradition hearings within our own nation a vast waste of time and money?

No because each state or commonwealth has a legal interest in prosecuting a felony committed within its borders. The crime was committed in PA and the hearing is to determine whether CA also has a legal interest in prosecuting the perp. In some cases a crime in PA is not a crime in another state and that's where it gets tricky. In this case the hearing will be pro foma.
