UPDATE: Teenager in custody after shooting on I-81 in Franklin County

A 16-year-old boy is in police custody following a shooting incident Sunday morning on I-81 south in Greene Township, Franklin County.

State troopers say they were performing a routine traffic stop near mile marker 18 around 7:00 a.m., when the driver of a black Chevrolet Impala pulled out a .22 caliber pistol and fired a round in the direction of the approaching trooper.

The trooper took cover behind the vehicle and him and the suspect exchanged fire.

The suspect did surrender and was taken into custody. No one was injured during the exchange.

After investigation, police learned that the driver, Sean Patrick Sellers, 16, of Mifflinburg, had stolen both the vehicle and the weapon from a home in Mifflinburg earlier in the morning.

Police said it is unclear why Sellers was driving to Franklin County.

Sellers is being charged as an adult and faces several charges, including attempted homicide, aggravated assault on a police officer, theft by unlawful taking, and firearms without a license.

Police are still investigating.

It comes just three weeks after a man was shot and killed on I-81 in Antrim Township, Franklin County. Police formed a task force, but they still have not found the shooter.

“I think it’s just the world we live in today,” says Taylor Shuff, Chambersburg resident. “People go crazy, they have guns, whether they protect themself or they just get angry. If you have a gun, you’re probably going to use it, people should protect themselves more.”
