Multiple pileups created a traffic nightmare along the Pennsylvania Turnpike Friday morning,  FOX29 reports.

The crash took place near the Willow Grove Exit (#351) on the eastbound side of the Pa. Turnpike. Traffic was backed up for miles leaving hundreds of drivers stranded.

At least 50 to 100 cars, trucks and SUVs were involved in the series of wrecks.

According to FOX29 reports, the first accident occurred around 7:40 a.m., believed to be caused by a tractor trailer, and then chain reaction after chain reaction occurred afterwards in the same area.

Pennsylvania State Police believe that motorists driving too close and too fast for the conditions may have played a role in the chain-reaction crashes.

The Turnpike was closed at Bensalem to Willow Grove.

Drivers should expect heavy delays and find alternate routes.
