Ambulance crews save lives everyday and many days, they go above and beyond the call of duty. Saturday, it just so happened to be caught on video.
A FOX43 viewer captured video of Lancaster EMS EMTs pulling a man on his motorized wheelchair. The chair broke down and left him stranded in the middle of an icy, snowy stretch of E. Vine Street in Lancaster.
Elisha Nieves and his constant travel companion, The Red Baron, depend on his wheelchair to get around. Two hours had passed and they had no idea how they were going to get home, until EMT Richard Canard and two coworkers stopped their ambulance to see if he was okay.
“It was snowing at the time and we didn’t feel comfortable leaving him there,” Canard said. “So we chose to actually chose to push and pull him to his residence about a block and a half away at the top of the hill.”
Canard used nine foot straps to wrap around the wheelchair and pull Nieves, while a volunteer EMT pushed from behind.
The strenuous task took about 45 minutes to get the man and his dog home. Though a little sore afterward, Canard said he was glad to do it.
“I know that any of my associates in EMS would have done the same thing,” he said.
Nieves is truly thankful for that.
“I thank them, and I would thank them dearly for the help that they showed me and the dog,” he said.
