Dauphin County parks host Maple Sugar Festival

The Dauphin County Parks and Recreation Department hosted its annual Maple Sugar Festival today at Fort Hunter Park in Harrisburg.

The free and interactive event educates those in attendance about hoe Maple Syrup is made. The kid-friendly festival lets participants try drilling holes in maple trees with old-fashioned tools.

There were also demonstrations on the making of maple candy. Organizers were happy the weather didn’t stop people from coming out to the event today.

“We see between 1300 and 1500 people who come out to this event so we’re happy that the weather is holding off and we’re able to get the event in today.”  Michelle Hornberger, Asst. Program Director for Dauphin Co. Parks and Rec.
Attendees were also treated to free vanilla ice cream with Maple Syrup on top. It takes about 40 gallons of tree sap to make one gallon of Maple Syrup.
