I-83 is back open in southern York County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation at 1:30 a.m. this morning reopened southbound Interstate 83 in southern York County. Southbound I-83 had been closed and traffic detoured since 1 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, due to safety concerns about the stability of the pavement because of a deteriorating drainage pipe undermining it. The location of this pipe is in Shrewsbury Township, about 1.2 miles north of the Maryland state line. Between 19,000 and 20,000 vehicles travel on this portion of southbound I-83 on a daily basis.

The repair to restore southbound traffic on I-83 involved excavating the area where the pavement had subsided and created a serious dip in the highway. The work was done for PennDOT by Kinsley Construction, Inc. of York, Pennsylvania. They built a concrete slab with steel beams encased in it to span over the affected area and provide support for vehicles traveling over it. The deteriorating pipe will still need to be addressed. This will be done within the next few weeks when material for insertion of a pipe liner becomes available.
