A new video released by Save the Children imagines what London would be like if it was embroiled in a war similar to Syria.

The unsettling “second a day” video features close-up shots of a young girl as she goes about her normal life. The video starts with the child celebrating her birthday.

As the video progresses, the child’s life drastically changes as war ravages the country and separates her from her family.

“A young girl’s life gets turned upside-down in this tragic second a day video… This is what war does to children,” the video description reads.

The video ends with the child again on her birthday, showing how much the child’s life has changed in a year.

The video ends with the words: “Just because it isn’t happening here, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.” The hashtag #SAVESYRIASCHILDREN is also shown on the screen.

The video was posted ahead of the three year anniversary of the conflict in Syria, in which over 10,000 children have died and over 2 million have become refugees.

“We hope the video will resonate with members of the public, particularly those who don’t know much about the situation in Syria so they can really understand the plight of innocent Syrian children,” Jake Lundi, Director of Brand and Communications at Save The Children, told The Independent. “The message to the public is just because it’s not happening here, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.”

Save the Children is an international non-governmental organization that promotes children’s rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries.
