PennDOT District 8 today will set work-zone signs on Route 997 near Waynesboro Borough in preparation for drainage and base repair operations this spring. This work marks the start of an overall project to repair a 2.6-mile section of Route 997 from Route 16, Main Street in Waynesboro to Nunnery Road in Washington Township.

The $2,078,525 contract was awarded on Sept. 26, 2013, to Valley Quarries, a division of New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc., of New Enterprise, Bedford County. The contract includes drainage updates, roadway base and shoulder repair, curb cut work required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, milling and resurfacing, guiderail installation, sign replacement, and new pavement markings.

PennDOT advises those who travel Route 997 north of Waynesboro that they may encounter single-lane traffic restrictions with flaggers assisting them through the work zone weekdays after 8:30 a.m. for pipe replacement and base repair in preparation for milling and resurfacing.

This section of Route 997 averages about 6,000 vehicles traveled daily. To avoid delays, travelers should allow for additional time in their plans or seek an alternate route.

Motorists are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones, not only for their safety, but for the safety of the road crews.

Work under this construction contract is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
