Police in Franklin County arrest a Maryland woman and man who attempted to flee the scene of a retail theft. It happened at about 4:53 pm Saturday at the Peebles Department Store along the 1500 block of East Main Street in Washington Township. Officers were conducting a traffic stop in the store’s parking lot, when a passerby told officers that two people had just committed retail theft. The suspects vehicle had just passed the officers.
The officers immediately pursued the fleeing vehicle and eventually pulled it over in the 400 block of Clayton Avenue. The driver, Susan Kershner, 45, of Smithsburg, Maryland, was found to be Driving While Under the Influence(DUI). Police also found the stolen Peebles merchandise, totaling more than $670 inside the vehicle. Kershner was charged with Fleeing and Eluding, 2 counts of DUI and Retail Theft
The passenger in vehicle, Barry Edington, 56, also of Smithsburg was charged with Retail Theft and Public Drunk. Following arraignment both were sent to Franklin County Prison.
