Mayor Eric Papenfuse has ordered flags lowered at City Hall in honor of the Honorable Eugenia Smith and the Honorable Judith Hill, both city councilwomen who died recently.

Councilwoman Eugenia Smith was a sitting council member and was chair of the Public Safety committee. She died suddenly Friday afternoon. Councilwoman Judith Hill was the city’s first African American councilwoman and a former member of the city school board. She died April 8 at the age of 85.

The Honorable Eugenia Smith, who spent more than 25 years in public service, was pronounced dead Friday afternoon at Harrisburg Hospital. Councilwoman Smith was recently re-elected to a second term on the Harrisburg City Council. She was the chair of the Public Safety Committee and worked closely with the Harrisburg fire and police departments.
