Five people are homeless after a fire on the 100-block of South Hartley Street in York. It happened at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

York Fire Chief David Michaels says the fire was contained to the third floor of the building. People on the first and second floors had to be evacuated. One dog died.

Firefighters had to throw a mattress and other items out of a window because the fire had spread throughout the apartment.

They are investigating the cause of the fire.
