(CNN) — Two tiny kittens are safe and sound after being shipped across California in a delivery truck.
Somehow, they were boxed up with fiberglass, loaded into a Cox Communications semi-truck and shipped from the Los Angeles area to a warehouse in Chula Vista.
“They were very, very lucky that they didn’t fall out of it in transport or when we were unloading the truck,” said Cox employee JC Collins.
Collins has been working at the warehouse for 34 years and thought he had seen it all. But he couldn’t believe it when a co-worker opened a box and found two little furballs staring right up at him.
“When I first saw them, I knew they were very, very young,” he said.
Collins called his nephew, who happens to be an investigator with the San Diego Humane Society.
Jenny Bonomini has been helping care for the black kittens and helped name them Mouse and Wifi.
“They actually came to us with their umbilical cord still attached,” she said. “What we think happened was the mom had the babies and she put them in a safe spot and she left, so then they got boxed up and they got shipped.”
And they couldn’t have ended up in a better place.
“We’re actually one of the only around-the-clock kitten nurseries in the country,” said Kelli Schry, San Diego Humane Society spokesperson. “Most shelters don’t have the resources to be able to provide the around-the-clock care that kittens need.”
That is why so many kittens and cats around the country have to be euthanized.
But Mouse and Wifi not only survived, they thrived.
“They’re fat and happy,” Bonomini said.
The two kittens will remain at the nursery for a few more weeks, then will be placed in a foster home.
When they’re eight weeks old, the plan is to spay and neuter them and put them up for adoption.
