(FOX59) – ROCKFORD, Ill. – A little girl born without fingers on her left hand is getting a prosthetic thanks to some engineering students and a 3D printer.
Kylie Wicker, 9, has always kept a positive attitude even though it hasn’t always been easy. Her father Jeromy knew Boylan Catholic had a 3D printer and asked a teacher if students in his engineering graphics class could help his daughter.
“(Her father) had seen online that you could make a 3D printout of the fingers on a plastic printer, and he knew we had one,” said teacher Bud May.
Similar prosthetics can cost up to $50,000, but May said the total cost of the project would be about $5 for plastic and fasteners.
Kylie’s hand is expected to be ready on Friday, and she’s excited.
“I can finally ride my bike,” she said.
