Local members of the Air Force Sergeants association made their way to the battlefield on Friday–fighting not in combat, but to help maintain one of our nation’s greatest national military parks.
It’s part of the Adopt-A-Position Program. Sixty members of the Air Force Sergeants Association and The First Sergeants Council–based at Dover Air Force Base– worked near the Southern part of the Gettysburg National Military Park in Adams County. Volunteers cut out small cedar trees growing in the area to help preserve the historic setting of the park.
“For us in the military, it’s huge for us to be able to come through and clear this area out so that people can still see the view of the battlefield,” explained Master Sergeant Jamie Beard of the Dover Air Force Base and Project Coordinator.
Volunteer work in the program especially helps because of budget cuts and staffing restraints.
