Leaders in the city of York say there’s no quick answer to reducing obesity but their efforts will help. York Mayor Kim Bracey is dedicated to bringing wellness to people in her city.  As a result of her efforts, the city’s been awarded a grant to support childhood obesity prevention initiatives.

Wednesday, outside of York City Hall, the United States Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Association awarded Mayor Bracey a $100,000 grant.

York’s “Eat Play Breathe: York’s Childhood Wellness Initiative” is the first place winner in the small city category.

Bracey says, “Our hope is teachers and administrators along with families and communities all embrace this and become role models for health in the eyes of our young people and students.”

Mayor Bracey said her healthy initiative is for children in pre-K through eighth grade.  Efforts include purchasing refrigeration units to store fresh produce and starting school-based gardens.  Only 6 cities throughout the country received the award.
