A Marietta man, Richard Smedley, 87,  is identified as the victim in a fatal crash involving two vehicles in Lancaster County.  It happened Wednesday at about 1:00 pm at the intersection of Route 441 and Furnace Road in East Donegal Township.

Susquehanna Regional Police say a northbound vehicle had stopped on Route 441 to make a left turn onto Furnace Road. A tractor trailer driven by Samuel Lightner, 51, of Elizabethtown, was behind the vehicle turning left and had come to a stop.

The driver of a van, behind the tractor trailer, realizing that the tractor trailer had stopped, swerved to the right to avoid hitting the rear of the tractor trailer.

Smedley was behind the van and then struck the tractor trailer. Smedley attempted to stop but was unable to avoid slamming into the rear of the tractor trailer.  Smedley died from his injuries at a local hospital. His wife, Jean Smedley, 87, a passenger, was also rushed by ambulance to a local hospital. No word on the extent of her injuries.
