The State Senate Government Committee unanimously approved Bill 1240, the Penn State Board Reorganization Act, on Tuesday.

The bill was drafted by State Senator John Yudichak (D-Luzerne/Carbon/Monroe) to create more accountability in the school in the aftermath of the child sex abuse scandal.

This bill would cut the Penn State Board of Trustees down from 30 members to 23, and the change the breakdown of elected and non-elected members.

Yudichak says he introduced the bill because there are too many opportunities for a small group within the Board to control it.

“The mistakes that were made at Penn State over the last few years, clearly there was a chain of command, a chain of information, where that failed to get to the entire board,” says Yudichak. “You look at whether they’re corporate boards, or boards in higher education, smaller boards are proven to be more effective.”
