For nearly two decades members of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Core have been dedicating their summers to helping others.
“It’s just an honor to be able to sit with somebody who can say, ‘Because of you guys and what you’re doing, I can say I have a home,’” said AmeriCorps member and team leader, Catherine Muthoni.
This year the ‘Atlantic Region Raven Three Team’ is partnering with York Habitat for Humanity, where they’re doing everything from yard work to renovating houses.
“From pouring cement in the foundation, to digging the foundations; they can build it from the ground up,” said Gary Jones, with a volunteer with York Habitat for Humanity.
During the team’s seven week stay, they’re also working with other non-profits throughout York.
“They work for both the Y, they work for Crispus Attucks, the Leg Up Farm, the Horn Farm; every minute that they’re not working, they’re working for another charity,” Jones said. “I want to see any other group of young people in the nation do that,” he added.
“Coming to work and doing construction, that’s cool but what’s really cool is the people you get to help,” said AmeriCorps member, Nicole Allen.
“When it’s done, that’s what you see that I have done something and nobody can ever take that away from me,” Muthoni added.
