Eighteen year old twin brothers were riding along the 2900 block of Old Trail Road Sunday afternoon when tragedy struck.

“It left the roadway, struck a culvert on the eastbound side and then impacted a rock,” said Sergeant Steve Lutz with the Newberry Township Police Department.

It happened around 1:30 p.m.  Jacob Hershey, who was driving of the 1970’s model Corvette, was taken to York Hospital where he was listed in serious condition as of Sunday night.

His passenger and brother, Joshua Hershey, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“From witness accounts, it appears that he was ejected,” Lutz said.  “He was in close proximity to the car, however, the car burst into flames so bystanders actually moved him prior to the police’s arrival.”

Detectives say the brothers lived about a mile away from where they crashed.

A preliminary investigation shows speed may have played a role in the fatal wreck.

An autopsy will be performed on Joshua Hershey’s body on Tuesday.
