A black bear was spotted wandering along Old Forge Road in Fairview Township, York County at around 1:00 pm Monday. The same bear was also seen on Lewisberry Road.  By the time township police arrived the bear had disappeared.

Typically this time of year, young black bears leave their mothers and seek out a new area to live. Bears may be attracted to bird feeders and garbage, so residents should keep those items secure. Due to the heat, bears may also be attracted to ponds, streams, and swimming pools.

Black bears will usually run when confronted, and typically only attack when they feel threatened or when protecting food or their young. If a bear is seen, please stay indoors and contact police and the PA Game Commission.
