A Swedish citizen who saved tens of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust was honored posthumously in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.
Raoul Wallenberg was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his actions during World War II.
Wallenberg managed to save thousands of Jews in 1944 by providing them with Swedish passports and purchasing 32 buildings to house some of them.
He was arrested in 1945 and mysteriously died in a Moscow prison camp at just 34-years-old.
Nina Lagergren, Wallenberg’s half-sister, accepted the award on his behalf saying “this is a magic moment”.
Wallenberg was made an honorary U.S. citizen in 1981 and a bust of him still resides in a room in the U.S. capitol.
