Mutt Zumbroom was visiting friends in Virginia 4 years ago when something caught his attention, appropriately enough, it was a mutt. “I saw a dog running down the middle of the highway and rather than seeing her get run over I stopped and picked her up. Unbeknownst to me she was pregnant” said Zumbroom.

That litter multiplied into 50 dogs. It became too tough to care for them all and he needed help, but couldn’t get it.  “I had been turned down by so many rescues that had been overloaded” said Zumbroom. That’s when Lancaster SPCA Director Susan Martin stepped in. “He was able to begin surrendering, surrendering forty two dogs in total to us so far” said Martin.

Martin said she’s relieved Zumbroom came to her when he did before things got worse. At just four weeks old the puppies are all being bottle fed. Martin said it’s going to be easy to find them homes but it’s a lot harder to find their parents homes. “They’re great dogs and although they came in a bit under socialized they walk nice on leashes and have great manners” said Martin.

All the dogs have been adopted except for 3 adults and the 10 remaining puppies. As for Mutt, he said if he could go back in time he still would help that dog wondering in Virginia, but would have had all these puppies spayed and neutered. “I’d have done it all over again. I mean it’s a dog man. What’s not to love” said Zumbroom.
