A pair of Republican Pennsylvania lawmakers held a forum on medical marijuana Thursday, saying legalization is gaining momentum in Pennsylvania.

Sen. Mike Folmer (R-48th) is a cancer survivor and one of the leading proponents of the Senate Bill 1182, which he calls “The Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Act.”

His bill passed the Senate Law and Justice Committee last month.

“It’s one more arrow to put in the quiver of a sick person and their doctor as they’re fighting whatever disease they’re fighting,” said Folmer.

His bill would legalize marijuana for medical purposes only.

Folmer says as he’s discussed the bill with other lawmakers and invited parents and relatives of sick people who would benefit from the drug to testify, he’s gained support for it.

Gov. Tom Corbett (R) announced in May he supports legalizing medical marijuana for children suffering from severe seizures. He backs a proposal that includes medical testing.

Rep. Mike Regan (R) organized the forum in Fairview Township, York County.

“As is always the case with issues that present challenges, the more information that can be disseminated to residents, the better,” said Regan.
