U.S. Senator Bob Casey stopped in Harrisburg on Friday to discuss the challenges for those considered to be in the “sandwich generation.” That’s people who are caring for older parents while still raising children and getting ready for retirement.

About 1 in 7 middle-aged adults are now financially supporting both an aging parent and a child.

Senator Casey says action needs to be taken to help middle class families affected by these challenges.

“The issues we’re here to talk about today, the so called “sandwich generation” obviously are directly connected to what’s happened to the middle class, what’s happened our economy over time and we can’t simply lament the challenge and lament what’s happened. We’ve got to have a strategy and action plan to deal with it,”  Casey said.

Almost half of adults in their 40’s and 50’s have a parent over the age of 65 and are either raising a young child or financially supporting grown children.
