More mosquito samples test postive for West Nile Virus, most in Cumberland County

The Pennsylvania West Nile Control Program says 27 mosquito samples test positive for West Nile Virus.  Most of the positive samples come from Cumberland County.  New Cumberland Borough and South Middleton Township each recorded two positive mosquito samples.  Reading Township in Adams County also has two positive samples

The following is a list of the new mosquito/bird positives for the day:

  • Cumberland – Lemoyne Boro
  • Cumberland – Middlesex Twp
  • Cumberland – New Cumberland Boro (2)
  • Cumberland – Newville Boro
  • Cumberland – North Middleton Twp
  • Cumberland – Silver Spring Twp
  • Cumberland – South Middleton Twp (2)
  • Cumberland – Wormleysburg Boro
  • Dauphin – East Hanover Twp
  • Dauphin – Harrisburg City
  • Delaware – Clifton Heights Boro (2)
  • Delaware – Radnor Twp

The West Nile Virus Control Program staff are responding with additional surveillance and control as needed.  The West Nile Virus which is transmitted by mosquitos, appeared for the first time in 2000 in Pennsylvania.  The state surveillance network covers 40 counties, trapping mosquitos, collecting dead birds and monitoring horses, people and in past years, sentinel chickens.
