Derry Township police have charged a man with criminal attempted rape after police say he made sexual advances on a 14-year-old girl.
Police on Thursday arrested Ivan Juarez Garcia, 23, and charged him with criminal attempt rape, criminal attempt statutory sexual assault, indecent assault, corruption of minors, unlawful contact with minor, simple assault, possession of a controlled substance and harassment.
Police said Garcia made sexual advances on the girl while she was babysitting his infant child. Afterwards, Garcia left his apartment to work at a restaurant on the 100 block of West Chocolate Avenue. While Garcia was away, the girl called her guardian to explain what happened.
The girl’s guardian confronted Garcia at the restaurant. During the altercation–he displayed a kitchen knife and struck the woman’s 12-year-old son, according to police reports.
Police were called to the restaurant and took Garcia into custody.
Garcia, whose bail was set at $500,000, is being held on a immigration detainer by the Department of Homeland Security, police said in a news release.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 8.
