The highest ranking officer to die in Afghanistan, Major General Harold J. Greene was a graduate of the Army War College in Carlisle. A gunman dressed as an afghan soldier opened fire at a training facility in Kabul and killed General Greene and wounded 15 other people. The general was on a tour of the facility. Greene was the deputy commanding general, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. The 55 year old general was involved in transition training for Afghan forces in preparation of the withdrawal of U.S. led coalition forces at the end of this year.
General Greene, a native of upstate New York, held two masters’ degrees, including a Masters of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, and a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Southern California.
He is the highest ranking officer killed by hostile action since Lieutenant General Timothy Maude, killed at the Pentagon in the September 11, attacks in 2001.
