UPDATE: Victim ID’d in police involved shooting in Springfield Township

The York County Coroner’s office has released the name of the man who was fatally shot by State troopers Saturday in Springfield township, York County.

Joseph Penderghest, 40, of Herndon Virginia is identified as the man who was shot and killed after he reportedly charged at troopers with a knife.

The incident happened along the 6600 block of Reynolds Mill Road, after troopers were originally dispatched for a vehicle accident.

Officials say when police  approached the vehicle they saw the man was cutting himself with an 8-inch folding knife. Police tried to talk to him and make him stop, when the man didn’t listen troopers tried to subdue the man by using  pepper spray and tasers, police said.

Penderghest then turned on the  troopers and began charging at them with the knife. Police say the troopers were forced to shoot, fatally wounding the man.

Police are still investigating. An autopsy with toxicology  is scheduled for Monday.
