Anger over trespassing at West Hempfield Twp pipeline meeting

The group Lancaster Against Pipelines has been holding meetings about the proposed natural gas pipeline across the area, and they spoke to another packed room at Silver Spring Baptist Church in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County on Monday night.

Some say they’re angry that a survey crew from Williams Partners was found trespassing on private land in Martic Township last week.

“There’s people crossing the fences, coming in your yard even though you’ve got ‘no trespassing’ signs up,  and doing their work, it can be pretty frightening,” says Martic Township resident Tim Spiese.

Williams Partners says the survey crew was “relieved of their duties” and will not return to  work on the project. A spokesman says the company apologized to the landowners affected.

At this meeting, more concerned residents asked about the environment and property rights.

The majority of the group was anti-pipeline, but some say it could be good for the community.

“Anything they do they’re going to pay for it, we know that much,” says John Lewis of West Hempfield Township. “If they cut down trees, even if they had to move a house, they’ll pay for the house and move you somewhere else.”
