SILVER SPRING TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPMT)-The Cumberland Valley School District said Friday it is continuing to work with authorities in its investigation of the district’s computer network breach that occurred last month.

The district hired a forensic specialist after learning of the breach on Aug. 21. School administrators met with the expert this week to discuss the findings of the investigation.

The hacker used a district server as a pass through to store documents.  According to district officials, the forensic expert cannot say with 100 percent certainty that no confidential information was accessed by the hacker.

The district plans to provide a presentation that  specifically deals with preventing identity theft. School administrators have not yet set a date for the presentation.

In a letter issued by the district, Superintendent Dr. Frederick Withum said the access which the hacker gained entry into the network has been shut down. We will continue to evaluate our security procedures, will do a broad security sweep of the entire network and will make any necessary enhancements to safeguard our network.

The person whose name appeared on the documents is not a student, a district employee or a community resident. The address listed on the fraudulent documents is based on the West Coast, Withum added.
