HARRISBURG, Pa. (WPMT)- Harrisburg’s former city treasurer John Campbell  is facing an additional theft charge after he was accused of stealing $2,750 from the Capital Region Stonewall Democrats.

According to court documents, Campbell, 26, served as treasurer of the organization for three years until he resigned on Sept. 4. Investigators discovered that Campbell wrote a check to himself  in the amount of $2,750 on July 29, court records state.

A statement issued by the Capitol Region Stonewall Democrats Thursday afternoon said, “We plan to increase our internal checks and balances to avoid this situation in the future, so we can continue to support pro-LGBT equality Democratic candidates.”

The group has cooperated with the Dauphin County District Attorney’s office and is pursuing full repayment of the missing funds.

Campbell was charged last month with stealing more than $8,000 while serving as executive director of the Historic Harrisburg Association. The organization oversaw the Lighten Up Harrisburg program, which raises money to repair broken city street lights.

He resigned from his elected office with the city of Harrisburg on Sept. 2.

A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 2.
