Would you know what to do during an emergency or if a major disaster hit our area?

Students at Millersville University in Lancaster County are getting ahead of the game by learning survival skills -- and it's all part of National Preparedness Month.

And they're not just learning inside the classroom. Many of them are taking time out of their schedule for some hands-on training.

"I think it's great. I mean it's good to know for everybody but especially like being a college student it might be the first time like you're away from home and you need to learn some basic things to be able to survive without help," said Drew Casale, a freshman at Millersville University.

Skills that will prepare them for a major disaster, winter storm, flood, power outage and even -- if they're trapped in their dorm rooms.

"If a tornado came, I learned that a basement would be the best place to go but if you can't, you want to go in your bathtub," said Sandon Eaton, a sophomore at Millersville University.

Students also had the opportunity to learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

"They go around to different stations and they learn different things like fire safety, weather safety, how to make a preparedness plan, how to make a preparedness kit," said Dr. Duane Hagelgans with the Center for Disaster Research & Education at Millersville University.

And the students are rewarded. The more they learn -- the better chance they have of winning prizes like a weather radio, disaster kit, fire extinguisher and even a tablet.
