The city of Harrisburg will be lit up with thousands of new streetlights next year.

The mayor announced that a $500,000 grant towards new LED streetlights will come from the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority. The mayor says the energy-efficient move will allow the city to save more than $400,000 a year.

“The overall project is going to pay for itself through the energy savings we’re going to receive from the lights,” says Mayor Eric Papenfuse.

"We're looking at an estimated cost of about $3 to $4 million so $500,000 is a big portion of the project cost," says Wayne Martin, city engineer.

Residents in Hall Manor say some of their streetlights are often out because people knock them out. Martin says these lights will be more durable, so they won't be broken as much.

"It would be a plus if they can fix all of them, because it would make it safer for the kids in the evening," says Samuel Hicks of Hall Manor.
