Expect New Traffic Patterns at I-83 and Route 581 Interchange, Oct. 28-29
PennDOT today announced that new traffic patterns will be implemented at the Interstate 83 interchange with Route 581 beginning the night of Oct. 28. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the I-83 work zone and to watch for new traffic configurations. This work is weather sensitive, and adverse conditions could postpone implementation of the new traffic patterns.

During the overnight hours Tuesday, Oct. 28, crews will reset the temporary concrete barrier and shift southbound I-83 traffic onto the newly widened and reconstructed section between the on ramp from Lowther Street and Exit 40-B for New Cumberland.

In this new configuration, a 1,500-foot long third lane of I-83 South will be opened to traffic between the Lowther Street on ramp and Exit 40-B. Lowther Street traffic headed to I-83 South will now enter the highway in this new travel lane and merge left before the exit for New Cumberland. The opening of this third lane will eliminate the current temporary stop sign for Lowther Street traffic to I-83 South.

On Wednesday, Oct. 29, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. crews will open the newly constructed portion of the Exit 41-B ramp from I-83 South to Lowther Street in Lemoyne and activate the new traffic signal at the intersection of 3rd and Lowther streets. I-83 South traffic exiting to Lemoyne will be realigned at the 3rd Street intersection in order to accommodate two lanes of ramp traffic to Lowther Street as well as left and right turn lanes to 3rd Street.

During the overnight hours of Wednesday, Oct. 29, crews will shift I-83 North traffic back to its original alignment. Once in this configuration, an acceleration lane will be provided for New Cumberland traffic headed to I-83 North, and the current temporary stop sign at the end of this ramp will be removed.
