Want to teach kids about acids and bases? It's very simple! All you need is three different kinds of candy from the leftover Halloween bag of goodies and some baking soda. Be sure to include at least one type of sour candy. Nerds or WarHeads are a great choice. Take three small bowls, and add warm water to each bowl. Drop a different kind of candy into each bowl. Allow the candies to dissolve about 5-10 minutes. You can gently stir at times to speed up the process. Then add about a teaspoon of baking soda to each bowl. Baking soda is a very strong base, so when added to the bowls with acidic candy, the response is a chemical reaction as they attempt neutralization. You'll see bubbles and frothiness occur and hear sizzling as this reaction takes place. If a candy is not acidic, no reaction occurs!
