It’s wheels up for Uber X in Pennsylvania.
The Public Utility Commission approved an experimental license for the ride-sharing business for two years.
Uber X allows user to get a ride through its app using a smartphone GPS to locate drivers.
Uber has 30 days to comply with conditions set by the PUC – most have to do with insurance. But one commissioner said he’s “gravely concerned” about safety and skeptical that Uber will meet the conditions.
“What we have required is for Uber to go above and beyond what we are requiring for traditional taxis, for insurance purposes,” says Pamela Witmer of the PUC. “So there are different stages, as Uber likes to say, for the process.”
If the company meets the conditions, Uber will be allowed to run in every city except Philadelphia.
