State Police are investigating an unusual theft in Adams County. Thieves took 42 speed limit signs, along with the connected posts.

Donald Hippensteel noticed something was off earlier this month when he was mowing his lawn. "I realized it was the speed zone sign missing," said Hippensteel. He reported the missing sign to Hamilton Township officials.

"We went out and checked and come to find out as we went through the township, we had a number of speed limit signs missing," said Hamilton Township Road Master Jay Livingston. " It is not the easiest thing to take one of these signs, I mean you have to have something to pull those signs out."

Now State Police are investigating. "We see the theft of road signs, what makes this one a little unusual is the number of signs that were reported at one time," said Sgt. William McAreavy, with Pennsylvania State Police in Gettysburg.

Costs
"If you estimate each sign is about $100 per sign, the post, the hardware and everything," said Livingston. Add that all up, the taxpayers are on the hook for thousands of dollars.

"We try to do everything with a small budget. So it's one more thing to add to that with limited funds which you have to start with," said Livingston. He believes the thieves plan to sell the signs and posts for money. "We have sent out letters to all of the scrap yards saying if they have an abundance of signs come in, to either call the State Police or us and let us know," said Livingston.
