River rescue teams are pushing forward in the search for 17-year-old Medard Kowalski, the Cumberland County teen who’s been missing since last Monday.

Kowalski disappeared after he took a canoe on the Susquehanna River to go hunting on the islands.

Rescue operations are scaled back now, but New Cumberland River Rescue is still taking the lead.

On Sunday, a clear day, there were about 60 people joining in the search, which included volunteers.
Lebanon County K-9s picked up a scent on Hoak and Zimmerman islands, and the search focused there.

“Cold, tiring,” says River Rescue Lt. Jeff Miller of conditions this week. “But if it were my son or daughter, I’d be doing the exact same thing.”

At the end of the day they returned to New Cumberland River Rescue to get warm. The community has been donating food for the searchers.

Teams are in constant contact with Medard’s family.

“They’re focused on the ultimate mission which is to find him, I don’t think its anything beyond that at this point,” says commander Matt Stoner. “I know day and night it’s got to be hard on them, very hard on the family but they’re focused on one final goal, to find him.”
