Once a week 12-year old Johnathen Speelman goes to Loucks Elementary in West York to teach first graders braille. He’s learned it himself to be able to read when he ultimately loses his sight.
He's got a rare disorder called RP. It could take a few months or a few years, but eventually he won't be able to see. That's why a teacher at Loucks Elementary in West York started a fund to help him raise money for a trip to New York and Washington, DC so that he can see landmarks such as the Empire State Building, the Natural History Museum and the White House before it's too late.
"I want to be one of the people that can actually see it and say to people that I saw it and know what they're talking about so I don't have to feel left out," said Speelman.
When asked if he's scared about losing his vision Speelman said "it doesn't really scare me. I'm just going to go through life how I always do, just my regular old self."
