Some folks in Lancaster County braved the cold weather for a special challenge.

Local runners and hikers laced up their shoes and layered up for the 5th Annual Sierra Club Polar Bear 5k Trail Run on Saturday. The Lancaster branch of the club hosted the event at Lancaster County Central Park. Proceeds raised support efforts to end global warming; the reason polar bears and other animals are at risk of extinction.

One of the biggest attractions and challenges of the 5k are the conditions.

"I think it's a very fun event for most people. It's not your run of the mill run down the street it' over with. it's challenging... with the hill at the end most people like. I think it's just a good time all around,"  Sierra Club co-chair Steve Heim said.

Prizes were given to the overall top three male and female runners in each age group.
