A violent suspect is now in custody after a chase that ended on the Susquehanna River. Police say he assaulted someone at the PennDOT headquarters in Harrisburg.

Police first received a call about harassment at about 10 a.m. on Tuesday. They found the suspect threatening people with a pole. He hit someone, then turned on police.

"The male aggressively charged the officers, charged one of the police cars, and began striking the police car with a pole," says Capt. Deric Moody of Harrisburg Police.

He damaged two police cars, one with an officer inside.

Then he tried to escape, walking across the ice on the river.
He made it to an island. Police made contact with him in a State Police helicopter hours later.

They say he had taken off some of his clothes, possibly because he got wet, and was in danger of hypothermia.

"It's an extremely dangerous situation anytime you have officers that have to walk on ice, you can take a look at the river and see that there's some places where you can still see moving water," says Capt. Moody.

Police have not yet released his identity. But they say he will be facing criminal charges.
