Criminal charges are pending against a 33-year-old man who  tried to escape police by crossing the frozen Susquehanna River on Monday.

Harrisburg Police were called to the 1100 block of S. Front Street  after receiving reports that a man was menacing people with a pole at the Penndot building.

When officers arrived,  Thomas Chan, charged at officers swinging a long tree branch. Chan the struck two police vehicles causing body damage and shattering a rear window in one vehicle.

Chan then took off towards the river and walked on the ice to a small island. Several law enforcement agencies assisted in recovering Chan from the island.

He was then taken to a local hospital to undergo treatment for his physical and mental condition.
