The Federal government filed charges Monday against former state treasurer Rob McCord.

McCord is charged with two counts of attempted extortion.

The charges come just three days after McCord resigned as state treasurer.

According to the court documents released Monday, the investigation is centered around McCord's failed campaign for governor last year.

During the time of late April and early May 2014, McCord is accused of attempting to extort campaign contributions from potential donors.

According to the documents, those businesses included a law firm and a property management company.

On Friday, following his resignation, McCord posted a video online where he admitted what he did was wrong and apologized for his actions.

A plea agreement was also filed Monday indicating that McCord would plead guilty to both charges during his arraignment which is set for February 17.

If found guilty, McCord could face up to 40 years in prison as well as up to 250 thousand dollars in fines.

Governor Tom Wolf must now pick a new person to serve the remaining two years of McCord's term as treasurer.
