HARRISBURG, PA (WPMT) Firefighters worked hard to contain a fast spreading fire in a Harrisburg duplex.  The fire broke out at about 5:34 pm in the duplex in the 1500 block of Vernon Street.  City police officers in the area spotted the fire and alerted 911 to the fire. The first city firefighters arrived minutes later to heavy smoke and flames that spread to the second and third floors. A second alarm was struck which brought in Mutual Aid partners from surrounding communities.  The fire was finally declared under control at about 6:09 pm but not before it heavily damaged the second and third floors. Damages are estimated to be in excess of $70,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Six adults and four children are being assisted by the Red Cross.
