EAST STROUDSBURG, PA (WPMT)  The number of East Stroudsburg University students suffering from gastrointestinal infection is on the decline. The Student Health Services Center says that despite seeing additional students since Thursday there is a decline in the severity of the illness.

A total of 154 students were seen at ESU’s Health Services Center or transported to Pocono Medical Center or an urgent care facility since Tuesday, February 10.  It should be noted that 154 students is representative of less than 2.5% of ESU’s total enrollment, which is currently 6,283.

To dispel rumors about a food-borne virus, East Stroudsburg Borough’s Health Inspector, in cooperation with the state health department,  spent hours on site in ESU’s dining hall Thursday conducting an assessment of the facility which was found to be in compliance.  We are committed to the health and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and will continue to work with the Health Department to monitor health conditions on campus.

  • Precautions in place at ESU include:
  • Common areas continue to be sanitized
  • Hand sanitizers are in place across campus in common areas and all members of the campus community are urged to use it often
  • Packs of Clorox wipes have been made available to students in residence halls to assist them in keeping room and personal areas clean and disinfected. Clorox wipes have also been made available to campus offices that are high traffic areas
  • Wellness bags are available in the P.O.D. at Dansbury Commons to all students and bags are also being delivered to Residence Halls and University Ridge regularly. These bags contain Gatorade, water, chickenn broth and saltines

Students and personnel with symptoms of infection are being asked to self-isolate and remain in place, residence hall rooms or at home, until the symptoms pass, which should be within 5 days.  If the symptoms do not pass in this time period or worsen, individuals should seek medical care at the Health Services Center, Pocono Medical Center (PMC) or urgent care facility
