An alleged bank robber who overpowered a guard and escaped a Virginia hospital is now back in custody. Wossen Assaye was being watched by two private guards at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia, when he managed to escape.

Assaye was being held on federal charges of armed bank robbery. Fairfax County Police say he was taken to the hospital for treatment after attempting to harm himself. A private security company was hired to guard him.

Police say Assaye managed to grab the gun of one of the guards and flee the hospital. A shot went off in the struggle and Assaye escaped in a hospital gown. Police say he was seen chasing people in the hospital. After the hospital lockdown, police announced he stole a vehicle, abandoned it as authorities searched for it, and then stole another. At some point, police say he managed to get some clothes.

Police Chief, Ed Roessler says, “An alert from a community member identified Mr. Assaye, through all the social media outlets where we put our message out, and called the Metropolitan Police Department and then Mr. Assaye was arrested by the Metropolitan Police and we are glad that he is in custody and that no one was gravely harmed during this event.”

Assaye is 42 years old. Tuesday’s incident happened around 3 a.m.
