It happened around 4 a.m. at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church. The prisoner, identified as Wossen Assaye, was taken to the hospital for medical treatment after attempting to harm himself, investigators said. While there, Assaye was in the custody of a private security company. During this time, a struggle broke about between Assaye and the security guard. Assaye overpowered the guard and took a gun from them. At this time police say one shot was fired.

Assaye then fled the hospital wearing only a gown.

Assaye is described as a black male, 6 ft tall and 170 pounds. He was being held by Alexandria City on federal charges for armed bank robbery.

Police released a picture of a woman identified as Assaye’s girlfriend. They said Assaye may be with the woman.
