LANCASTER, PA (WPMT) An arrest in a weekend shooting in Lancaster City. It happened Sunday at about 1:34 pm, along the 400 block of Lafayette Street.   A 27-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg.  He was taken to Lancaster General Hospital.  Polices also say a 21-year-old woman who was standing near the victim at the time of the shooting.

Investigators determined that the woman’s ex-boyfriend, Rafiq Vanhook, 26, of E. New Street, was inside a car on the street and  fired several rounds at the two victims, who were walking / standing in the block. Vanhook then drove away.

The male victim was struck by one of the shots and the woman was nearly struck. A ten-year-old child who had no connection whatsoever to the suspect or victims was also in close proximity to the shooting. There were other people along the street who witnessed the shooting.

It was later determined that Vanhook stole the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting from the female victim during a confrontation earlier in the day. Vanhook allegedly forcibly took the handgun from her by pulling it from her grasp.  Vanhook has a prior criminal conviction which disqualifies him from legally possessing a firearm

Later that night, police located Vanhook’s vehicle, a maroon 2002 Buick Century, parked in the area of E. New St. and N. Lime St.  Police kept watch on the car and arrested Vanhook without incident this morning as he approached the car.

Charges against Vanhook, include Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Persons not to Possess Firearms, Firearms not to be Carried Without a License, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person.

He is currently awaiting arraignment.
